How did shrinking/drying of Lake Chad contribute to starting the Darfur conflict?

According to Al Gore’s book, An Inconvenient Truth, the shrinking/drying-up of Lake Chad was a major contributor to starting the conflict in Darfur, relating to conflicts over dwindling freshwater.

I am trying to link the start of the Darfur conflict more clearly to the shrinking lake. I have been searching, but have been unsuccessful in finding further details about this.

Could anyone enlighten me? Thank you! :’ )

Al Gore could not make a statement without providing sources – there should have been sources identified in the appendix. Try following up with those sources and you’ll find additional sources, etc.
