LDS:Did you know that Elvis took missionary instructions?

.
Book of Mormon — possibly Elvis Presley’s personal copy, reputed to have been in his room when he died — is indeed in the archives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Book of Mormon was given to the LDS Church by members of the Osmond family, who received it from a woman named Cricket Butler, Butler, a friend of Elvis, gave the Book of Mormon to him in the months preceding his death. The book was subsequently returned to Butler by Elvis’ father, Vernon, two days after Elvis’ death.”She sat in on the missionary discussions at Graceland and knows the date Elvis was to be baptized, which never came to pass due to Elvis’ death,” So does that mean that Elvis is on the fast track to celestial glory?.
(Deseret News Oct 6,2006)

Yes…but it doesn’t mean as much as some would like it to. Elvis studied with many different religions towards the end of his life. Was he close to converting to ours? We can’t really know that. All we have is one individual’s claims that he had a baptismal date, but in all honesty, how reliable is that?

Elvis was meeting with the missionaries at some point. He had a copy of the BOM. That’s all we know for sure. Was he ready to accept the gospel? I hope so, but whether he was or wasn’t, we do the work for him here and hope that he accepts the gospel when he’s taught in the next life. It’s the same for Elvis as it is for everyone else. They get a final chance. All people do…and isn’t it wonderful to know that?

In any case, though, there is no fast track to celestial glory. There never has been, because while God never wanted the way back to Him to be impossibly difficult, there still aren’t any cheats or short cuts. If Elvis accepts the gospel in the spirit world, he, like everyone else, will have to learn the basics. He’ll have to go through the repentance process and come to know his Savior. It will be the same for him as it is for all of us, regardless of when we find the gospel.

Richard Dutcher’s Brigham City is a rare find in the recent onslaught of murky religion-based thrillers and Satanic conspiracies–a modern crime thriller with a powerful and passionate spiritual message. In some ways it plays like a contemporary Western, with Dutcher as the upright county sheriff and local church bishop of a rural Utah town terrorized by a serial killer. Like the marshal of a pea…
